JAMES E. HEYWARD was always involved in his family’s small businesses from working the hot dog wagon they owned in Jamaica, Queens to painting walls for his uncle’s contracting company and performing bookkeeping tasks in his father’s accounting practice.
The lessons he learned growing up led him to start his first business, as a student at Duke University. He started a DJ service and radio show that played for various groups on and off campus. The success of his DJ company led to him forming two companies, Take-Two Entertainment and Madd Waxx Records in 1995 and 1999 respectively.
To manage his businesses, he had to develop a strong proficiency in QuickBooks. The better he became at bookkeeping, the more he started to enjoy the financial management aspect of running the companies. His interest led to the establishment of a CPA firm that has first-hand experience with the challenges small businesses and their owners face and the desire to reach realistic solutions.
